You may or may not know this, but I get really, really excited about music videos. Especially when they’re artfully directed, packed with references and styled to perfection. So you can imagine how thrilled I was today to wake up to a brand new music video from none other than Janelle Monáe.
All in all, the Make Me Feel video is a dazzling assembly of colours, lights, textures, choreography and fashion. Every frame serves us #looks upon LOOKS, but here’s a few of my favourite I’ll be attempting to emulate in varying degrees this weekend (more than one at once, I hope):
#1: SEQUINS ON SEQUINS
In case you’ve missed the neon post-it memo, minimalism is in hibernation and in its place maximalism has taken centre stage. Pair glitter with rhinestones, silk with sequins and metallics with diamantés. Go extra or go home.
#2: STATEMENT ANKLE BOOTS JUST GOT STATEMENT-IER
Ms Monáe did not come to play. She’s taking the trend we’ve all loved throughout A/W and giving it a twist for spring. Those statement ankle boots you stocked up on last season; can’t decide between the embroidered pair or the red ones? Guess what? WEAR THEM BOTH.
#3: MONDRIAN, BODYSUITS AND FUR
I’m getting major 70s Yves Saint Laurent, but a millennial update.
#4: MESH EMBROIDERED TROUSERS
And queue these becoming the next big Instagram style trend in 3…2…1. Ok, so maybe these are only wearable within the confines of a music video set, but this is a fantasy I’m feeling. And I can bet we’re going to see a fair few variations of these…
#5: CRYSTALS ON CRYSTALS
Our obnoxious friend maximalism is back again. This time to say that if you’re going to wear crystals, make sure you bring your own pink/green neon lighting, because HOW FUTRO-COOL DOES IT LOOK?
#6: THE ‘HALF ‘N’ HALF’ BLAZER
Hmm, first the ankle boots, now this blazer in a video where the storyline heavily explores bisexuality? I see you Janelle Monáe, I see you. Now excuse me whilst I start cutting up and re-sewing my blazers together to recreate this.
#7: GRAPHIC MAKEUP
I could dedicate an entire post to the beauty direction of this video. From the cobalt eyeliner to sequin lip art, you can tell the MUA must have had fun creating looks for this video.
