I’m a big fan of the city break. While you don’t get the chance to fully immerse yourself in a destination over the course of three days, if you’re savvy with planning you can get a taster of what a city is about, and whether you might want to come back in future!
City breaks need to meet a number of criteria; the city has to be interesting and — most importantly — the flight has to be short. You might fancy a city break in Istanbul or Dubai, but you just can’t spend that long flying (four hours and nearly seven hours respectively) when you’ve only got a weekend to enjoy.
A city break needs a short flight; less than two hours ideally, so you’re guaranteed to spend no more than four hours of a 72-hour long weekend in the air. Below are three cities that are within two hours of flying time of London– read on and see which one might be the perfect fit for your next city break destination!
It may not be the most exotic of locations, but you’d be surprised by just how good a time you’ll be able to have in the Scottish capital.
The city is similar to London in terms of the general vibe; there’s a lot going on, and there’s always exciting things to do in Edinburgh when you head there for a few days. Not only is the city home to its famous comedy festival, but there’s a host of bars, clubs, and restaurants that are the perfect choice for a night out.
A flight to Edinburgh from London takes around an hour and a half, but that’s more than acceptable for a three-day stay.
Copenhagen is a beautiful city, perhaps most famous for its statue of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid. The city itself is relaxed and cool, with plenty of small shops to browse and delightful Danish cafes to browse.
Despite its calm atmosphere, Copenhagen is a wonderful choice if you’re heading off on a city break in search of nightlife. The Zoo Bar, in particular, has an outstanding reputation, so you can head out for an amazing night, then watch the sun rise over the ocean.
Copenhagen scrapes into the definition of two hours from London; the flight time is one hour and 50 minutes, but that’s still short enough for a cultured weekend in one of Europe’s hidden gems.
Finally, a more conventional choice. Paris is the city that never disappoints; from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre museum, you’re never going to be short of anything to do. Whether you’re a culture vulture or want to shop up a storm in the famous fashion district, Paris is the right choice for you.
Not only does Paris offer a wealth of delights in terms of art, culture, and shopping, but it’s also a wonderful destination for lovers of fine cuisine.
Paris has the shortest flight time of the cities on this list, at around 50 minutes; with a good headwind, you can take off at Heathrow and be strolling onto the Metro in the same hour.
With a guaranteed short flight time, all of the above ensure you will have the maximum time in your chosen city to explore and indulge. Enjoy!
