There’s a real science to curating a collection of clothes, one I’m still not sure I’ve mastered. I do however know that 20% of my wardrobe does 80% of the work, and knowing exactly what these pieces are and how to style them is a step towards wardrobe nirvana. With the promise of spring in the air, there’s no better time to trim down the excess and simplify your closet’s offering – all in 3 easy steps. It’s not like you had plans this weekend anyway, right?

Step 1: Shop Your Own Wardrobe

Shopping without long changing room queues, crowds, and spending money? Believe it or not, it does exist.

Do this once in a while to rediscover your collection:

Wack on some tunes, grab a drink and spend an evening trying on your wardrobe. Literally go through it all; try on old favourites, try on what you’ve forgotten about, figure out what you like and what you don’t like, find new ways to style them. It they don’t fit, can you get them tailored?

90% of items in your wardrobe you will have brought because you felt a connection of some sort to them at the time. By ‘shopping’ your wardrobe, you’ll be able to distinguish between what you still have a connection to and what’s just taking up space.

Donate anything that’s just not doing it, but don’t forget it’s ok to keep a few pieces that have sentimental value if you can’t bear to part with them!

Step 2: The 12 Month Rule

Once you’ve got a good idea of what’s in your collection, a good way to refine your collection further still is to think of the last time you wore it. If you haven’t worn it in the last 12 months, chances are you won’t wear it in the next 12 months and it’s time for it to go.

The hanger trick – a way to implement the 12 month rule:

I read this one on Pinterest so absolutely cannot take the credit, but I think it’s a fantastic idea!

Basically at the beginning of the year, switch all your hangers to hang the opposite way. Once you’ve worn an item, switch the hanger back around. At the end of the year, get rid of everything that’s still hanging the other way.

Step 3: Reorganise Your Wardrobe

If you find yourself staring blankly at your wardrobe each morning, consider reorganising your wardrobe to get a fresh perspective.

  • Organise by style, then colour so you can find what you need easily.
  • Sorting by occasion is another option. I like to keep any ‘party’ clothes well away from my workwear.
  • Consider seasonal storage – e.g. now’s the perfect time to fold away the chunky knits until winter.
  • Don’t forget accessories – they can transform a piece of clothing entirely so keep scarves & belts within easy reach

A word of caution to the enthusiastic detoxer: Fashion moves in cycles. Everything that was in style 10 years ago  seems to come back into style at some point or another (look at the 90s revival right now!), so to save regret you may want to store away especially unique or sentimental pieces for a later date!
