I’ve never been one to shy away from colour. From my delightfully obnoxious fuchsia coat to my orange & blue graduation look, my longtime readers know by now that I really do enjoy wearing the rainbow.
And that included my lip colour choices – until now. I’ve favoured a spectrum of reds, pinks, oranges, even experimenting with lilac grey, but never nude. Despite how much everyone and their wife professes their love for the nude lip, I was convinced they didn’t suit me, and I stuck to my trusty brights.
That all changed when I met Too Faced’s Melted Matte Lipstick in ‘Nude’. In a bid to get more ‘work appropriate’ shades into my collection, I’d actually requested the shade specifically when my mum was in the US last summer. However when I saw it in person, I initially feared I’d made the wrong decision.
Melted Matte in Nude is very peachy toned, which I thought would just wash me out. In all honesty, if I don’t wear it with bold eyes & a warming blush, then that’s what it ends up doing. But when worn with the right makeup, I really like the finished look.
As a self-confessed colour fiend, I’ve really grown to appreciate how this shade can balance out a look when I want a piece of clothing to speak for itself (Exhibit A here).
And what encourages me to reach for it all the more? The formula. This is easily one of the most comfortable liquid lipsticks I’ve tried. Whereas with others I’ve found I have to do a bit of prep with exfoliating, moisturising etc to make wear more bearable, this one requires none of it. It just glides on and has impressive lasting power without the drying.
And that’s how I became a nude convert. I finally see the simple sophistication in a shade like this – only about 2 years late.
How have you stepped out of your comfort zone with lip colour?
